How to win the buy box on Amazon: what Amazon ranks, what it ignores and how to get it back
· 13 min read · Buy box and pricing
Short answer: On Amazon the buy box is now officially called the Featured Offer: the offer that sits next to the Add to Cart and Buy Now buttons on a product page. To win it, compete on total price (item price plus shipping), offer fast, free shipping with a specific delivery date, add free returns, keep the item in stock and keep your order experience clean: few chargebacks and few complaints about damaged, wrong or not-as-described items. Since September 2026, Amazon no longer has a seller eligibility requirement, so every seller's offer is evaluated, including new sellers. Amazon says it does not use customer reviews, the Prime badge or FBA versus self-fulfillment to pick the winner when everything else is equal. If your offer is not winning, check Pricing Health in Seller Central first. Whatever you do, decide your lowest acceptable price before you start cutting; a dashboard that tracks competitor prices without going below your floor price is built on exactly that rule.
What the buy box on Amazon is
Amazon's help pages define the Featured Offer as the offer that appears with the Add to Cart / Buy Now buttons in the Offer Display on a product detail page. Amazon evaluates all offers on the product and picks the one it considers most attractive for the customer. When no single offer is clearly better, the Featured Offer rotates between the best offers.
Offers that do not win are still for sale. According to Amazon's offer placement page, up to three other eligible offers appear in the Other Sellers on Amazon box, and the rest are reachable through the "new & used" (or "new") link that opens the full offer list. Few shoppers go that far, which is why the buy box matters so much: most orders go to the offer behind the main button.
Two details sellers often miss:
- Each variation has its own winner. If a product comes in sizes or colors, Amazon decides the Featured Offer separately for each variation. You can hold it for the black medium and lose it for the black large, which is one more reason every variant needs its own code (see our guide on how to create sku numbers).
- Different shoppers can see different winners. Shipping location, Prime membership and filters such as delivery date search can change which offer is featured.
Who can win the buy box in 2026?
This changed recently. Amazon's former "Featured Offer eligibility" page has been removed, and Amazon now states that as of September 2026 it no longer maintains a seller eligibility requirement; offers from all sellers are evaluated. That answers the common question of how to become buy box eligible: there is no separate seller-level gate any more.
Two limits remain:
- Your offer still has to be competitive. Being evaluated is not the same as being selected.
- Amazon may feature no one. If none of the offers meet Amazon's customer experience requirements, there is no Featured Offer at all, even when the product has a single seller. This is what sellers usually mean by "buy box suppression."
So a new seller can win the buy box. What a new seller lacks is order history, and order volume is one of the performance signals Amazon looks at, although Amazon says it takes steps so that smaller sellers are not disadvantaged against larger ones.
What Amazon ranks
Amazon says it ranks qualified offers the same way for every product and never uses manual overrides. The factors it names:
- Total price. Item price plus shipping fee "plays an important role." Coupons and other promotions count too.
- Delivery promise. Faster offers, and offers with a specific delivery date instead of a range, are more likely to win. Promise only what you can keep: late deliveries hurt your Late Shipment Rate.
- Free shipping. Amazon prefers an all-inclusive price and gives its own example: a $40 offer with free shipping beats a $35 offer with $5 shipping. A cart-level fee, an item-level fee or a free shipping threshold the cart has not reached all mean your offer does not count as free shipping.
- Free returns. Especially for items that are often returned, such as apparel. You can set this for the whole account or for specific products in your Return settings.
- Seller performance. Order volume, chargeback rate and complaints in your Voice of the Customer dashboard: damaged or defective items, wrong item or size, missing parts, inaccurate description, product condition not as expected, expiration date issues.
- Stock. An out-of-stock offer cannot be featured.
What Amazon does not consider
Amazon lists three things it does not use:
- Customer reviews and seller star ratings. Performance is measured through the dimensions above, not through seller feedback stars.
- The Prime badge. With everything else equal, offers with and without Prime are equally likely to win.
- Fulfillment method. With everything else equal, Fulfilled by Amazon and Fulfilled by Merchant offers are equally likely to win.
In practice FBA can still help indirectly, because it often means faster and free delivery promises. But the method itself is not a ranking factor.
How to check your buy box on Amazon
- Featured Offer percentage: In Seller Central Business Reports. Amazon calculates it as the page views in which your offer was featured divided by the total page views of your products. This is the number to watch over time.
- Pricing Health: Shows offers that are not eligible to become the Featured Offer because of price, and offers that are eligible and priced within 5% of the current Featured Offer price. For many of them it suggests a one-click action.
Amazon disqualifies an offer on price in two cases: when its total price is above the competitive external price (the lowest price for the same or an equivalent item recently found at a reputable retailer outside Amazon), or when it is significantly higher than recent prices on Amazon or elsewhere. Reference prices Amazon may use include the current Featured Offer price, the 60-day average selling price and the product's list price. If you think the external price is outdated, Amazon offers a self-service dispute: in the Seller Central Help menu, choose Get help and resources and the Featured Offer tile, then enter your ASIN and SKU.
How to get the buy box back on Amazon
When the buy box disappears, work through this list in order:
- Is the offer shippable to the customer's location? Offers that exclude a region are never shown to customers there.
- Is it in stock?
- Is it in Pricing Health as ineligible or close to the Featured Offer price?
- Did a competitor change shipping speed, free shipping or free returns, not only price?
- Any new complaints in Voice of the Customer or a rise in chargebacks?
Amazon also offers Automate Pricing, which adjusts your prices in real time within the parameters you set. Whatever tool you use, set a minimum price first. Pricing Health even flags offers priced below the minimum price you set as potential pricing errors.
Example (assumption): A product sells for $30.00 with free shipping. Your referral fee, fulfillment cost, product cost and ad spend leave $2.40 per unit. A competitor drops to $28.50 and you follow; your margin falls to $0.90, before a single return. Winning the buy box at that price can mean selling more units for almost nothing. Work out your floor first, then decide whether faster delivery or free returns would win the offer more cheaply than another price cut.
How Pratienda helps
Pratienda is a multichannel dashboard for Trendyol, Hepsiburada and N11, the leading marketplaces in Turkey. It does not connect to Amazon. The principle behind its repricer is the one this guide ends with: the Pro plan's repricer and buybox tracking watch competitor prices on those three marketplaces and suggest new prices without going below the floor price you set, and prices never change without your approval. Its fee analysis shows the commission and fees on each order next to your actual profit, and stock stays in sync across the three marketplaces, so a sale on one does not leave you out of stock, or oversold, on another. If you also sell in Turkey, our guide on the trendyol commission rate explains how to build that floor price there. Starter is $59 a month (tax excluded).
FAQ
Does FBA help you win the buy box on Amazon?
Not directly. Amazon states that, with all other factors equal, Fulfilled by Amazon and Fulfilled by Merchant offers are equally likely to be featured. FBA can still help through faster, free delivery promises, which are ranking factors.
Can a new seller win the buy box?
Yes. Since September 2026 Amazon no longer has a seller eligibility requirement, so a new seller's offer is evaluated like everyone else's. Price, delivery promise, stock and a clean order record still decide whether it is selected.
Is the Featured Offer the same as the buy box?
Yes. "Featured Offer" is Amazon's own term in Seller Central; "buy box" is the name sellers kept using, and Amazon's support forms still mention "Buy Box eligibility."
